What are Flavonoids? Their use in CBD

Flavonoids are organic (carbon-based) compounds found in plants. Flavonoids serve several functions in plants including pigmentation(coloring) of flowers, Filtration of incident ultraviolet rays from sunlight, carrying chemical messages to regulate biological processes, and preventing infections. Moreover, flavonoids provide protection from external organisms that cause damage to leaves and petals. Flavonoids can be found in several dietary sources including blueberries, oranges, cocoa, green tea, and peanuts.

Flavonoids are really beneficial for human health and a number of researches have confirmed the positive impact of flavonoids. The most important advantage of flavonoid consumption is to prevent oxidation. Oxidation is caused by free radicals that are produced during the process of metabolism and react with proteins, DNA, lipids, and cell membranes. Oxidation can lead to aging and inflammation. Flavonoids help to neutralize the free radicals thereby protecting the damage. It’s for this reason that flavonoid-rich products like green tea and blueberries are prescribed to prevent aging. Flavonoids have also been reported to treat neural disorders by modulating neural signals and responses. A flavonoid called Quercetin is prescribed to treat fibromyalgia: a neurological disorder causing fatigue, distress, and body pain. Moreover, flavonoids also help in treating antibiotic resistance. Patients with chronic bacterial prostatitis have their prostates inhabited by drug-resistant bacteria which make the condition incurable. Studies have suggested that the use of flavonoids like Quercetin and Naringenin are effective for treating the condition. Anecdotal evidence indicates that flavonoids also have anti-fungal, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory properties, and folks use them for pain relief.

Cannabis is a rich source of flavonoids containing around twenty different types. It is speculated that the medicinal benefits associated with Cannabis e.g. pain relief, muscle relaxation are due, in part, to flavonoids contained within. Research suggests that cannabinoids, terpenes, and flavonoids act synergistically to produce the overall effect; the phenomenon is called the “entourage effect”.

Products called “cannaflavins” are used to produce the overall positive effect contained in cannabis plants. A scientifically tested, legally approved, and popularly sold cannaflavin product is CBD oil, which is used to reproduce the benefits of CBD and flavonoids simultaneously.  Thus CBD oil relieves anxiety, eliminates muscle spasticity, cure neural disorders, protects heart health, etc. The product is safe for over-the-counter use and free from adverse side effects. It can be inhaled, ingested, and applied topically. It’s highly recommended to adopt the use of CBD oil as a lifestyle change.
